Day 19 – Ketchikan, Alaska

We docked around 6:00 this morning and we thought we would easily wake up early.  Not really.  The time here is 9:00 a.m. Texas time when it is 6:00 Alaska time.  The change sort of has our internal clocks screwed up.  Anyway, we got up and made it outside by around 7:30, which was fine.

They kept telling us what good deals a person could get with diamonds and Toni was really curious, so………………since I was doing my best to be a good sport and all, I let her drag me into the finest and cheapest diamond house there.  Wow.  After being shown half of everything in the shop, including the $35,000 two carat diamond that they recommended highly, I was finally able to just bolt and run out the door, leaving my poor sweet wife in the clutches of the salesmen.  My exodus worked pretty well though as Toni was able to follow shortly.

After about a day and a half, on the boat, dry land felt like it was moving.  I may not be able to drive a straight line when we get back to the camper.

This is a fishing village with no road or highway access.  Mainly it is a tourist trap with 983 jewelry strores/

But.........................it has lots of wildlife as shown in these two pictures!

It really is a pretty little town and this was the only day that the sun wasn't shining.......but, it wasn't cold.

On of the tours took us to a state park with lots of totem poles.  Each one tells a story about the family that carved them.

This one was carved by a family with big heads.

This is the inside of a clan house where all the members of a clan would stay during the winter.  This end is reserved for the chief.

This is the front side of the clan house, which always faced the sea.

They had just one door and it was always very small so if an enemy appeared, he would have to crawl through the opening and they could chop his head off before he could hurt anyone.  They didn't like outsiders.

Lots of totem poles.

We then went to a lumberjack competition where two teams of two members each competed in various lumberjack type events.

Such as sawing wood.  Duh!

And cutting timeber with a very sharp axe.

And shimmying up a very tall pole like a squirrel!  They really were very impressive.

And log rolling to see who would fall off first.

We then went to the lumberjack demonstration/competition.  Pictures to come.
